Starting off the week with a bang, here is Lindsey & Nathan's wedding day! I met Lindsey through Kent, who was classmates with her at Montevallo. You may remember their engagement session from here. Though the rain was a lot of fun, we were all glad it stayed away for the wedding day.

Lindsey & Nathan were married at beautiful

Aldridge Gardens in Hoover and honeymooned in San Diego. Congratulations to this wonderful couple! It was such a joy photographing their engagement and wedding day.

I loved this sweet moment of their first look together...with a duck!

The paperie for the wedding was all made by a friend of the bride and groom. I just couldn't resist revealing this hilarious marital advice.

We had a great time exploring the nooks and crannies at Sloss Furnace. I'm so thrilled to have been part of Sarah's whole wedding planning experience. 2 Sweet Girls | Birmingham Children's Photography

Here's Lilly, Anna and Elizabeth. They had a blast running through the gardens and getting the ultimate reward: lollipops and spin tops!

You may remember Lilly and Elizabeth from here. They're down visiting from beautiful Charleston SC, their adorable cousin, Anna. Anne was a little shy at first, but once Grandpa got going, she was hooked!

What 11 Years Ago Looked Like...

I was 16, he was 18. We met when we were preteens. We spent a pretty large junk of our formative years close to one another. Band, church, band bus, church bus...you get the picture. We liked church and band. (We still do!)

Kent was that boy for me in high school that would ignore me for sport. He didn't dare look my way. Or if he did choose to speak to me, it was only for a second. Always leaving me wanting more. I secretly loved it. I thought the chance of us ever being boyfriend and girlfriend was gone when he graduated high school. He was (at that time) going off to Auburn, I was still a measly high schooler.

I underestimated the power of a Summer romance. I think he considered asking me out many years prior, but after finding out that I listened to rap (95.7 Jamz), he backed away. Oh to be young! This time was different. I was mature. I was a Senior. I was...still listening to rap. So, we decided to jet off to Birmingham for a movie and ice cream. Boy, was I nervous. I think I doused myself in massive amounts of perfume and citrus lotion.

We saw a not-so-typical first date movie, Road Trip. We had a great time. Holding hands, laughing, nervously laughing. Then, it was off to Baskin Robbins. He got a chocolate cone, I got a mint chocolate chip milkshake. Gotta keep the breath fresh for the first date make out session! I think that first date kind of set the tone for our relationship. It's not fussy. It's relaxed and unpretentious. I like that.

It's a little sad that we can't visit these spots anymore. But, I still have this:

I keep all of my movie stubs and write a little note on the back reminding me who I saw it with. It's such a fun way to relive our dating years through movie stubs, because there are LOTS!

The Summer of 2001 was filled with: late movies, drives to the lake, Sarah Mclachlan, DMB, Third Eye Blind, swing sets, writing notes in church and endless flirting. The Fall came so quickly, but we kept it all going (for the most part).

And here we are. I'm so thankful that Kent finally asked me to be his girlfriend, so that I can now be called his wife.

Emma | Birmingham Newborn Photographer

Meet 4 day old Emma Leigh. She's got a beautiful head full of brown hair, just like her mama. She made quite the entrance coming about 2 weeks early, weighing 7.5 lbs and 20 inches long. Her mama and I go way back, grade school back! Growing up in a small town, well, there's nothing quite like it. You may also remember Hollie's maternity session here.

Keep your eye out, because we'll be watching Miss Emma grow together in her precious first year. Pulling up, sitting up, crawling and walking! Congratulations Hollie and Jay. I know she's got you wrapped around her little fingers already!

*The shadow box holding the shoes and dress were what Hollie was brought home in. I love that.

Natalie | Birmingham Senior Portraits

I met Natalie downtown and was immediately pumped when I saw all the clothes and shoes in her trunk. Oh the joys of being a girly-girl! Natalie graduates in a few days and will be going off to the University of Alabama in the Fall. Congratulations Natalie, I had such a great time photographing you. You look beautiful!

Claire 1 Year | Birmingham Children's Photographer

I've thought for awhile what I will write for this special post. How Claire's first year has seemingly flown by. How much fun I've had getting to know this sweet little girl. How many hours I've spent sitting around with Claire's mama (Carla) talking about all the photo shoots to come and what we would do for them. I have to say, Claire's 1 year session is hands down, one of my favorites to date. Before we get into that, let's take a quick look back...

The day Claire was born-This was a first for me. It was unforgettable. It was amazing. I hope I can again have the privilege of documenting other babies being born.

Claire's Newborn session-I prepared myself for months for this session. This was my first newborn to photograph. Little did I know that this session would jump start to absolute love of newborn photography.

Claire's 3 Month session- I have to say, what I remember most about this session was how HOT it was that day. Shooting inside a studio apartment was a genius idea from Carla.

Claire's 6 Month session- Bubblegum! We brought everything but the kitchen sink with us including: Pinball machines, board games, popcorn, a popcorn machine, a desk, apple crates, vintage blocks...

Claire's 9 Month session- You'll recognize this session right away. A few shots are in the banner up top! Carla wanted simple and classic. So we shot in studio. Carla made her dress, I painted a chair!

And here we are. The 1 year session. So, with pinwheels, my childhood crib, a last minute umbrella delivery, lots of glitter, birthday balloons and a lack of understanding of how Birmingham traffic works, we headed down to my Grandmother's farm. We dodged many curious cows to get our shoots, and I'm so thrilled with the results.

Happy birthday sweet, baby Claire. I adore your entire family. It's been an amazing experience documenting your first year.

Hollie | Birmingham Maternity Photography

I'm officially back on the interwebz. We've been without power since last Wednesday. But, nothing a little flirting with the power company outside can't fix! But, Kent and I are so thankful to God for our power being our only problem through this past week.

Now, on a much lighter note. Hollie and I grew up together in good ol' Clanton, AL. We went to rival colleges (Roll Tide!) and got reconnected through a mutual friend. So, I was so excited when Hollie and I met to talk about her maternity and eventual newborn sessions. Hollie and Jay were such great sports on a very typical hot Spring morning. Hollie is one of those pregnant woman who always looks flawless. I'm jealous and I'm not even pregnant!

Emma Leigh we all cannot wait to meet you, I know you'll be beautiful. She'll make her debut here in about a month!

A Note About Special K...

While working on the next blog post, I thought I'd share a shot that I got of Special K last weekend.

It was probably pretty funny to see the behind the scenes of this particular shot. Bless his heart, I boss him around and tell him to do some of the silliest things until I get what I want out of the shoot! I love this one of him so much because he is genuinely laughing.

He's out buying me body wash and a chicken sandwich, so I think he deserves at least one blog entry, don't ya think?

Say hello to sweet Elijah. Look at that head full of hair! I headed to Tuscaloosa (Roll Tide!) on a beautiful day to meet 1 week old Elijah. Elijah's Mommy and I studied in the art department together at UA and it was so nice catching up after a hand full of years being away.

This was also my first BOY newborn, and he did not disappoint! How cute is that sleeping owl knit hat? His nursery walls were painted by his talented mama and it was decorated with amazing owls everywhere.

This is Part I of II, so keep an eye out later in the week to meet the whole family including Elijah's big sister, Amarie!

Kelleigh | Birmingham Maternity Photography

Right before Kent and I first married, he was living in Florida with his band. I was in my last semester at UA. 3 weeks after graduation, we married and I moved down to Florida. Almost immediately, we met Kelleigh and her husband Jason. We were instant friends. There was a tradition of making breakfast for dinner every Sunday together. We laughed A LOT! So, when we moved back to Alabama, we knew we'd miss our friendship with them the most.

So, us 4 try and see each other as much as schedules will allow. Kent & I loaded up and headed down for the 9 hour drive. And this is what part of that weekend looked like. Kelleigh is such a beautiful pregnant woman. You can really tell how excited she is to be a mama. That little yellow dress is what Kelleigh was brought home in after she was born.

Baby Courtney Paige will be here in a little over a month! Congratulations to sweet friends, Kelleigh & Jason!

I'm in love with this after wedding session! Amy was my one and only college roommate. We had a lot of fun together-many pranks were pulled. So, when Amy called me to photograph her wedding, I was thrilled.

Her and Jerry married on a Sunday afternoon following not only the church service, but also Jerry's baptism. It was amazing. The following weekend, we went out for some extra shooting time to capture Amy & Jerry in their element, the outdoors. Check out those uber-outdoorsy high heels!

To say that I was excited about this session would be a huge understatement. Many ideas were hatched, plans were made. But then, the temperature dropped about 20 degrees and was accompanied by rain. Cancellation was likely, but right as we were to begin shooting, it stopped raining! It was still dreadfully cold, but Whitney toughed it out like a pro.

This was the last wedding of 2010 and I think it was fitting. What a way to end 2010...with a bang! Miriam and I went to school together and spent most of our time together on danceteam. Claire was the first baby I began documenting every 3 months for her first year...and then some! This was certainly one of the coolest venues of the year. A beautifully modern loft in downtown Birmingham. In between shots Claire was greeted with the licks and hugs of 2 very friendly dogs. All in a days work! This photo also became a HUGE gallery wrap and hangs right above Claire's crib. She's just waiting to pull it down for a closer look.

Heather, Senior Portrait

Did you know that I used to kind of babysit Heather? I know...I'm old. Heather's parent and my parent used to hang and Heather is a little bit younger than me. So, I felt super old when she asked me to shoot her senior portraits. This shot was one of the first of the day. It's very simple, but there aren't any distractions from how lovely she looks. I think her eyes are my favorite part!

This shoot was like eye candy for me. Not only did Elizabeth bring it with her Carrie Bradshaw-like dress, but she brought giant pink balloons too. So why did I chose a photo that shows the top of her dress, in black and white without the balloons? The texture in this image really got me. The vines, the dress, the bow, the windy hair. There was no need for big, colorful distractions. I hope I'll have another opportunity to photograph Elizabeth. That was a real pleasure.

Lukas, Boy-Bike-Barn, February 20, 2010

This barn at the time, stood right behind my mother's home. It was calling my name. So, with Lukas, I explored the barn and found this wonderfully rusted bike. He looks so calm and serene on that old bike. I photographed him until the sun went down. This particular image is one that will always remain in my portfolio.

This was shot taken about 45 minutes before Sue walked down the aisle. I think this image speaks so loudly to me because it (in my mind) epitomizes their loving relationship. Quiet, strong, lovely.

This was such a wonderful wedding to be a part of. Katie and Josh are one of the most romantic couples I know. Everything was just perfect. The ceremony took place at Samford University and was beautiful. Nice and Christmas-y! The Wine Loft was especially enjoyable. These 2 went to culinary school, so you know the food was amazing!

This family is so sweet, brave and they're good fakers! It was FREEZING the day of our shoot. We picked the coldest day so far this Fall to photograph 11 people. But, we made it happen and I think they did a fabulous job looking comfy and cozy!

Protecting My Work

If you're a long time follower of my blog, then you may have noticed that I can't make up my mind about watermarking my images. I go from, "Watermarks hinder what I want the final product to look like", to "I don't want anyone claiming these images as their own. I've got to protect them". It's a struggle between artistic vision and a smart business decision.

Last week, I stumbled upon yet another photographer whose images were lifted from her Facebook fan page and were used in someone else's portfolio...claiming that photographers work as their own. You with me? Basically, someone took credit for this photographers work. Add this to the fact that Facebook isn't the most trustworthy spot to publish unprotected images, or for that matter, protected images. People crop out watermarks all the time. So, I've made a definitive decision.

I've (not so slowly) lifted the majority of my images off of Facebook. Again, the intention is not to seem abrupt, but to protect my work and your families pictures. I'm sure you wouldn't be crazy about seeing someone using your wedding day or newborn baby to further their business, claiming it has their own. It's an ongoing process, but I don't think I'll be fighting the temptation to NOT watermark anymore.

The King family is incredibly special to me. We go WAY back. Greg and Monica are responsible for giving me some of my first jobs as a 15 year old. I'm giving away my age here, but I used to babysit the older kids. Monica had a huge hand in molding what I do today. Monica is a photographer as well, and she used to let me tag along and hold anything I could on photo shoots.

We all had so much fun with this shoot...and I think it comes through. Greg, Monica and the rest of the King's, thank you so much for allowing me to capture your sweet family.

This family was made for the J.Crew catalog. They're so pretty! I photographed the "L" family at their beautiful home, and they really flourish in their own space. Something to note about this shoot: this was a Saturday afternoon in Alabama. This is football country and we got 2 boys and Dad outside for pictures! So, photos can be done on a Saturday in the Fall! They did, however, make a few quick trips inside to get an update.

Little Campbell is such a sweet and articulate 2 year old. There aren't a lot of 2 year olds out there that you can actually understand. We had a great time running around downtown Birmingham on an early Sunday morning. We were practically the only ones around!

Side note: A bee decided to invade my flats while shooting and stung me on the bottom of my foot! That was my first sting...ever! Poor Campbell, I don't think he knew what to make of my flailing and yelling. Luckily, his mom was there to hold my hand and assure me that bee stings do in fact hurt that much.

Walker's 5th Birthday

What to Wear | Casual Fall Edition

One of the first questions I get from clients planning their shoot is "What should we wear?" I thought I'd put together a look for young children, older children and adults that is flattering as a group, individually and also casual and comfy.

One of the keys to great looking photos is what clients choose to wear. Coordination is a good rule of thumb, as opposed to matching. I'm a fan of bright colors, lots of layers and a little something unexpected. Just remember, don't let the outfit overtake your family's personality. If you're a fun and outdoorsy family, let you clothes reflect that. If you're a fan of vintage looks, rock it out.

Don't let the sleeping images fool you, this little girl loves to be wide awake! She stared me down and showed me a few smiles for almost our entire session. Ali & Jason {Birmingham AL Wedding Photography}

Ever been to a wedding and thought, "This is so them."? That's exactly what Ali & Jason's wedding was like. So them! From the intimate ceremony, to the fabulous birdcage veil Ali wore to the delicious dinner served at their The Club reception along with ending the night with celebratory cigars.

I met Ali through my husband. They were classmates at Samford that became fast friends. I am so thankful for the new friends we've found in Ali & Jason. Thank you two for choosing me to photograph your beautiful wedding. It was incredible!

I am an enormous John Mayer fan. If you know me, then this is not groundbreaking news. He occupies about 8 of the 10 CD spots allotted in my car and is my lone bumper sticker. I remember hearing him for the very first time. I was in the car with Kent, both of us listening to an acoustic version of 'Your Body is a Wonderland'. I also remember typing his name into my freshman year computer as "John Mayor" searching for any other acoustic versions that I could find.

While sifting through his blog, I found an entry that not so shockingly caught my attention. Here's what the entry titled "Photography" says:

Q: Over the years, we've seen pieces of your photography work. Will we ever see a more in depth exploration of photography? Possible a book or site dedicated wholly to your images? -- asked by samslens

A: I was thinking about this on the plane to New Zealand. I'd like to be hired to shoot someone for a magazine photo spread. No assistants, no lighting, just me, the subject and a couple of cameras. I love the William Claxton/Barry Feinstein black and white thing. I think photography has gotten to such an equalized place in terms of image quality that it's really all about who you got doing what, not that you got a well exposed and composed image of it. (Although it helps.)

His answer is so refreshing and challenging for me.

Refreshing because: At the end of the day (a phrase I loathe), it's all about what that photographer is gonna bring to the table. Though, I'm not 100% with him when it comes to proper exposure and composition, I get what he's saying. I do believe a photographer should understand the inter-workings of a camera and how to use it to their advantage.

Challenging because: I should be pushing myself with my equipment resources no matter how expensive or inexpensive they may be. Be content. Create no matter what. This can pose a challenge because of the constant push for faster glass, the bigger, better camera. Getting back to basics is a creative goal. I'm not there, but will continue to strive for it.

Kent asked me yesterday if I could photograph anyone in the world who would it be. I got "John Ma" out of my mouth, and he said, "Besides John Mayer". I'd always imagined asking him if I could take his picture before asking for an autograph or anything. But, in terms of just a subject and just me with my camera, I came up with a 2nd answer. I would've loved the opportunity to photograph both of my grandfathers.

This is my friend Jennifer. She is a wonderful photographer. We've been wanting to get together and have a little shoot out for awhile. So, we gathered our chairs, equipment and sweat rags and made our way out in the Alabama heat. Since both of us tend to stay behind the camera, being in front of it was a little worrisome for the both of us. But we loosened up quickly, realizing we work very similarly and trying to beat the noon sun.

This family was so much fun! It was such a pleasure being around them capturing that with my camera. I think everyone laughed the entire time! Their family farm is so warm and friendly, and I think it shows through. Seeing as how it's the middle of July in Alabama, there was a need to cool off in the pool after our session was over. They were also generous enough not to throw me in the pool. I think the camera in my hand had a little something to do with it!

The Bathroom Redo: The Reveal

Well, we did it. It's done and we are quite relieved. Here's one last look at the before.

After:

And, here's what we did:

Ripped up old tile and carpet. Retiled whole bathroom.
Removed wallpaper border.
Ripped out old vanity sink and replaced it with a pedestal.
Replaced toilet.
Knocked out and replaced old ceramic soup dish, toilet paper holder & towel rack with new chrome fixtures.
Replaced both light fixtures. I used the DIY tutorial from here.
Added molding to bottom of the walls.
Painted walls, molding and doors.

I was most excited about decorating. So, here are some details.

Bathroom Redo: Part II

As you can see, I had a nice little playlist to keep me going while painting into the midnight hour. What you don't see is the obscene amount of Lady Gaga songs that were on that list. She's my not so guilt pleasure. We're getting closer and closer. Part III will be the final reveal...so stay tuned!

Bathroom Redo: Part I

This month has brought with it a little break in between photo shoots, so around our house that means we can kick it into high gear with home improvements. Up on deck: the hall bathroom. Back when Kent and I first bought our house, the first thing I said was the bathroom needs a facelift, like yesterday. Fastforward 3 years and we are finally ready to take the leap.

First up, head to Lowes. Get a toilet, sink, lights, tile. We're done, right? Oh my goodness no! I just wanted to decorate this stupid bathroom. Who knew we had to buy half of Lowes to put down tile flooring. Also, did you know that faucets are sometimes more than the actual sink. It's a pyramid scheme I say! Plus, this project takes longer than a day. Ugh, I needed a break. So, I headed to Anthropologie (swoon) for some inspiration and retail therapy while Kent helped rip up the old carpet and tile. Did I mention this bathroom was half tile half carpeted.

When I started discussing my decorating ideas with Kent, he blindsided me with his opinions and vetos. What the heck? It turns out, he's got some strong opinions and we don't always see eye to eye on things like this. Enter compromise. Couples: If you're considering any sort of renovation on your home, be warned...it can be a stresser. Talk of a shower curtain can start innocently enough, and then all of a sudden...BAM you're in a 15 minute fight about taste level!

So, this is the current state of the bathroom. Carpet ripped up, tile is half down (not grouted yet), wallpaper border is down (kill me), toilet and towel holders are knocked down and spackled. Stay tuned for part II, paint goes up, more tile goes down!

Katie: Maternity

Ya'll, it's hot! Like, crazy hot. So, the logical choice is to head outside with a pregnant woman, right? Katie was such a sport! Isn't she the cutest pregnant woman you've ever seen? Her family is very special to me, particularly her son, Collins. You see, I have another job too. I'm a nanny to 2 boys, Collins being one of them. I adore them! Collins is awaiting the arrival of his baby sister Elizabeth. Note: Olivia the octopus in the last shot. Olivia is somewhat of a nursery mascot!

So, let's marvel at how amazing Katie looks and only dream to look that good pregnant! Big thanks to Allison for allowing us to use her gorgeous home for our shoot!

Our official summer

Well friends, it seems summer has officially started for the Michael household. I have a small break in shoots, so I have more time to concentrate on exciting projects around the house. Special K is a huge fan! All of my ideas, just waiting to be executed by him. Lemme tell you, when you get excited about a trip to Lowes, shopping for grout color, tile and pedestal sinks...you know you're getting up there. Good grief! 5 years ago, 2 hours in Lowes would've sent me into a tailspin of boredom and anger. All I have to say is if you guys hang tight for about 2 more weeks, I will have a fantastic before & after post!

Besides camping out at Lowes, we watched some rockin' movies. We watched this on Friday and this on Saturday. Gotta love the $1 theater! I'm contemplating teaching a summer movie theater etiquette class. Anyone interested? Here's a preview:

1. It's never appropriate to sit directly beside a couple when there are around 100 other seats available.
2. When you do insist on sitting next to me, crossing your legs and taking up half of my allotted space is unacceptable.
3. If you even think about talking on your phone during the movie, get ready sister...I'm giving you the dirtiest look you've ever seen.

Orientation starts Thursday!

Sunday, we decided to check out a new church. I think we'll be making that trip again soon! Kent & I spent some time on our quaint little deck listening to one of his sermon podcasts.

Ava

Time to be honest. On my way to this shoot, I was preparing myself for some hard, hard work. That's okay, of course. But, why? Well, I photographed Ava last summer and let's just say she wasn't all too thrilled with the experience. Sure, there were some glimmers of happiness throughout, but we really had to earn it!

Back to The Botanical Gardens, within the first shutter click there was laughter and silly faces galore! It was amazing. It was a different child. How could this be? Surely this is just a fluke. Oh contraire. Take a look below.

Week 19

This is Ashley, my sister-in-law. When she announced that she was expecting, I thought that a photo series could be a possibility. You see, I wasn't around when she was pregnant with her first born, Walker. I was in college, she was in Chicago. I've been looking forward to putting my little twist on maternity for awhile now! Of course, it's not a new idea; she did it, he shoots a great series and my friend, Kamin, recently shot a weekly series (& outtakes) with her sister. So, we thought we'd document every month (or so) of the pregnancy.

In case you were wondering, Ashley is having a girl! I think when she told me, I did some damage to her poor eardrum. Be sure to keep checking back for updates and to watch her belly grow!
